REVIEWS

Album Review-Fatea 2025

Sound of the Sirens are an acoustic singer-songwriting duo comprising of Abbe Wood & Hannah Walker based in Exeter. They have been crafting their sound for a decade and the sublime unaccompanied harmonies on first song Who Are You are obviously the product of long practice.

Chasing Skies is the start of the album proper and more representative of their upbeat folk/pop style. Infinite Kindness is a delicate electric piano tune, with their harmonies driving the powerful positive words. The title song is a poppier song, although as with everything here the lyrics are considered views on aspects of life as they see it.

The Part Where You’re Gone is another song from the pop side of their work. An unusual try at a breakup song, with the poetic flow of words which is one of their hallmarks. The strident harmonies and changes of pace within the song progress the story wonderfully. They are equally effective on a piano ballad. Tao is simple song on the surface but reveals its layers as it progresses. Just piano, occasional guitar chords and distant strings make this a truly effective modern folk ballad.

The flow of the album is very well planned. Following Tao with Coming Back a powerful tune both musically and lyrically is just the best of many good pieces of placement, running order seems to be a lost art, but not for Sound OF The Sirens. They play Chape Arts Bath later this year and I’ll be there as I have a feeling they will be a great live act on the showing of Coming Back alone, which has an energy and vibrancy about it that I’m looking forward to hearing in person.

Their website says, “Abbe and Hannah remain dedicated to crafting music that lingers in the hearts and minds of those who listen.” And they have achieved their aim, especially when listening to Things Change, a song about the concerns everyone feels from time to time in relationships. Their great strength is their words, and how they translate those into songs that entertain as well as offering food for thought.

Sacred Dreaming is a jazzy tune, with staccato sections which they breeze through, another vocal which shows the true quality of their music. They use these changes of pace throughout the album to push the words to the front of the song, and this could be the best of several highlights here. Closing with To The End we are back to the sweeter side of their harmonies, if not in the subject matter which is endings of many sorts.

Sound of The Sirens are typical of many groups working at the intersection of pop and folk, they just do it so much better than most. They aren’t afraid to put their voices to the test and push themselves to the limit to get their message across. An album that could well feature on best of lists at the end of the year.

Abbe Wood and Hannah Walker are Exeter-based singer-songwriters who have carved out a distinct place in the UK acoustic scene in their 11-track offering The Other Me (self-released, no catalogue number). The album consists of razor-sharp creative music and head-swiveling in-your-face harmonies which are designed to make their audience sit up and think; they fly wide of the folk ambit, dabbling wildly towards rock-pop material – but they always come back with a bang. FolkWales verdict: Thumbs up!
